Outreach sports programme

We believe the best way to contribute to the nation is through community service!

Plan of Action –Under the able guidance of Prof Padmini – H.O.D Physical Education department – NMKRV College for Women, a sports development initiative was planned. This programme is being done in two schools – Puttenahalli GHPS JP Nagar 7th phase & Hommegowdanagara GHPS Wilson Garden. There are 15 children attending the camp, 8 boys and 6 girls from each school.

Puttenahalli GHPS – The school infrastructure does not have a playground and so we assemble at the nearby BBMP ground a few blocks away to practice. PE teacher Mrs Revathi is very accommodating & supportive of all the proposals put forth.

Hommegowda GHPS – This has a tiled area within the school, which we use as a play area. PE teacher Mr Vijay Kumar has been very proactive to see that the children make maximum benefit of this programme. He has been there with us from the start to ensure the camp is successful.

Nutrition drive for the players – The children were given a nutritious breakfast after every session containing egg, plantain, milk along with some South Indian breakfast.

Playing gear – A special initiative by the Sports department saw the distribution of  a sports T-shirt and shoes + socks for the players.

A regular practice plan looks as below –

  • Timing – 8am to 9am  – Duration 60mins
  • Warm up – 10 mins
  • Fundaments – Ball handling skills / dribbling / passing / shooting  20mins
  • Skill development drills – 15 mins
  • Theory – 5 mins
  • Cooling down – 5 mins

The programme was conducted in two phases.

  • All skills and drills we can do without the requirement of a court were practiced at the schools.
  • NMKRV college for Women – Basketball court

The children have been practicing full court matches in the college grounds 2 days a week. The players have been grouped according to their abilities and teams have been formed from each school. Thereby we are training them to play in a competitive environment. The players are now familiar with the terms of the game and are aware of the rules. They have also learnt the names of the drills / exercises they do. Theoretic knowledge of the game is very important for players to take part in competitive matches.

What Next

Teams from both schools are being trained to participate in an Invitation basketball tournament which was scheduled on 4th & 5th of April 2020 but due to Pandemic the match could not be conducted………
