At the end of the course the students will be able to:

OE 1.1

• Demonstrate a rudimentary knowledge of Western thought and history from ancient Greek literature to Renaissance and pre- Romantic writing.
• Learn to make connections between concepts and text (feminism: AzarNafisi; culture/ tradition/ colonialism: Alan Paton).
• Recognise the characteristics of language and phonetics.

OE 2.1

• Discuss the colonial and post-colonial Indian literature with respect to some key post-colonial concepts.
• Assess and compare the Western thought of Augustan and Romantic literature
• Comprehend the next level in Discourse, which is syntax level.

OE 3.1

• Intensely critique and evaluate colonial and post-colonial Indian literature, history and thought (Gandhi, ShivramKaranth, Partition writers)
• Explain Indian Deconstruction with Meaning of Mahabharatha.
• Explain the Western thought in Victorian period through a few exemplary literary works.
• Handle Discourse at the level of analysing short passages using given parameters.

OE 4.1

• Get an exposure to more modern Western literary theories like the Reader Response Theory.
• Study a few European and Indian texts based on Feminist theory.
• Get an exposure to the next level of Discourse, Practical Criticism of Poetry, which also explores the various aspects of Feminism.
• Get anintroduction to Twentieth Century literature with texts that illustrate post-modern and existential preoccupations.

• Demonstrate the ability to understand the Post-colonial theory and Third World socio political movements.
• Understand and appreciate the narratives and discourses chosen to generate an indigenous approach to literary criticism.
• Study Indian, African and Caribbean writing.
• Critique and evaluate selections of ancient and modern Indian poetry in translation along with two texts from the British canon.
